Eugenia luschnathiana "Bahia Mel Honey" Seeds

Eugenia luschnathiana, also known as Pitomba, is a fruit-bearing plant native to Bahia, Brazil, and is referred to as pitomba-da-bahia, uvalha do campo, ubaid do campo, or uvalheira in Brazil. This evergreen shrub or small tree, if left unpruned, can grow up to 4-10 meters in height.

The leaves are oblong-narrow oval shape tapering to a pointlanceolate, dark green above, pale below, and have a leathery texture with a short stalk that joins a leaf to a stempetiole. The flowers, with four (rarely five) yellowish-white petals, have a diameter of 1.5-2 cm. The fruit is a bright orange-yellow, spherical; globe shapedglobose berry with a diameter of 2.5-5 cm, containing one or two (rarely up to four) seeds with a diameter of 1 cm. The tree begins fruit production at 3-5 years of age and does not require cross-pollination.

The fruit has a tender skin and a soft, juicy, golden-yellow pulp, which has a sweet, aromatic flavor with a resinous taste that is common in Eugenias. The fruit is typically harvested within 1-2 days of changing from green to yellow, as it has a 1-3 day window when it is at its best. Pitomba is used for jellies, preserves, and carbonated beverages.

Although it is grown among rare fruit collectors in the United States, it is still a rare species. Pitomba cultivation is limited to subtropical regions, and the plant can tolerate frosts only down to about −1 °C.

I found a lot of noteworthy Eugenia on this trip, here's another from the same drop!

The Holy Grail.

I've been searching for Duguetia marcgraviana for FAR too long, and supplies are extremely limited. Taste is similar to my favorite fruit, Duguetia stenantha; but with more of a cantaloupe flavor and unique sugar apple qualities.
