Annona spinescens is small rare tree with pointed branch tips and having a spiny appearance; these move with the growing tip so its never really spiny or thorny as such. A small tree to 6m with yellow green flowers followed by apple sized, edible and juicy, bright orange fruit with orange flesh.
Widespread but uncommon in lowland dry forest and gallery forest on sandy soils from Paraguay to eastern Brazil. Annona spinescens does best in drier areas and can be deciduous in colder times of the year.
Annona spinescens comes from the tropics of the Amazon Jungle. Interested in seeing what other fruits are found there? Check out this rare chocolate relative Theobroma obovatum, or look at our whole collection!
