Pourouma cecropiifolia / Amazon Grape Seeds
Pourouma cecropiifolia, also known as Amazon grape, Amazon tree-grape, or uvilla (syn. P. multifida), is a species of Pourouma native to the western Amazon Basin in tropical South America.
This medium-sized evergreen tree grows to a height of 20 meters, with palmately compound leaves that have 9-11 leaflets, 10-20 cm long and 2.5-4 cm wide, on a 20 cm petiole. The white flowers are produced in clusters of 20 or more in a 10 cm long inflorescence and the tree is dioecious.
The fruit of the Pourouma cecropiifolia is ovoid, 1-2 cm long, and turns purple when ripe. It has a grape-like flavor but a wintergreen aroma, and the skin is rough but easily peeled and inedible. The fruit is enjoyed either fresh or made into juice.
Pourouma cecropiifolia comes from the tropics of the Amazon Jungle. Interested in seeing what other fruits are found there? Check out super sweet Campomanesia lineatfolia, or look at our whole collection!
